Become an Auxiliary Police Officer

Auxiliary police are uniformed members of the NYPD. They help prevent crime through regular patrols and by providing assistance at major incidents. The program welcomes people who have a sense of community and public service or an interest in a career in law enforcement.

Auxiliary police officers must:

  • Be at least 17 years of age
  • Live in New York City or work in New York City and live in one of the six authorized surrounding counties (Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, or Putnam)
  • Be in good health
  • Be able to read and write English
  • Never have been convicted of a felony or arrested for a serious crime
  • Have United States citizenship, a valid visa, or an alien registration card
