Composting

You can get information about composting from the Department of Sanitation (DSNY).

DSNY funds and manages the NYC Compost Project, which offers compost-related workshops and classes throughout the five boroughs. The Project also runs neighborhood-based Food Scrap Drop Off opportunities, ensuring that those food scraps are composted locally.

The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) temporarily suspended composting collection on Monday, May 4, 2020.

The City suspended composting collection to divert resources to emergency COVID-19 response efforts. Additionally, this crisis and the resulting decrease in economic activity have forced the City to make significant budget cuts to maintain emergency services and core municipal services.

While the service is suspended, you can:

Do not put items out in your brown organics bin.

Keep your brown bin in storage for when service resumes. DSNY will not take back or replace brown bins at this time.

    Composting Collection Return

Curbside composting collection will return with the goal of lowering the carbon footprint and broadening access to composting services.

Starting in August 2021, New Yorkers who are interested in compost collection can request it through a simple online form or by calling 311. Residents will now be required to opt into the service, allowing DSNY to provide weekly collection where there is demand, starting in October 2021.

The service will continue to grow as demand grows.
