If you were stopped by an NYPD police officer, they may have given you a business card to identify themselves.
The Right to Know Act, in effect as of October 19, 2018, requires police officers to identify themselves by providing their name, rank, command, and shield number to civilians at the beginning of certain interactions, and to provide this information on a business card.
The business card also has information about:
- How to request Body-Worn Camera footage
- How to request police stop information
- How to submit a comment or complaint about the police encounter
The Right to Know Act also requires police officers to explain that searches will not be conducted if a person refuses to provide consent to the search, and that these requests must be documented.
You can get more detailed information about the Right to Know Act and your rights under this law.

Reporting a Violation of the Right to Know Act
You can submit a comment or complaint about your interaction with the NYPD if you feel the police officer did not follow these guidelines. CCRB will investigate the report, and if it finds that misconduct occurred, they will recommend discipline to the Police Commissioner.
