    Find out if public schools are open or closed.

    The NYC Public School Calendar lists important dates for parents and students during the school year, including:

    • Holiday closures
    • Parent teacher conferences
    • Half-days and early dismissals
    • Enrollment deadlines
    • Public meetings

    The 2024-2025 school year began on Thursday, September 5, 2024. The last day for all students will be Thursday, June 26, 2025.

    New York City public schools are closed for students on the following days during the 2024–2025 school year.

    Please note that on “snow days” or days when school buildings are closed due to an emergency, all students and families should plan on participating in remote learning.

    Juneteenth

    If there is severe weather or an emergency, public schools may:

    • Close school buildings
    • Open buildings late or dismiss students early
    • Cancel field trips or after school activities
    • Move to all-remote learning

    If there are going to be closures or changes to the schedule, the Department of Education will make an announcement as early as possible before 5 AM on the affected day.

    You can check school status on:

    Yellow school bus service may also be delayed or suspended because of severe weather or road conditions. If schools are open, yellow school buses should be operating. For more information about school buses, visit the School Transportation page.

    If schools remain open during severe weather or Citywide emergencies, parents should use their discretion when deciding whether to allow their children to attend school.

    To provide comments or complaints about DOE's school closure policy, contact them on their website.

    All complaints are accepted, including those from DOE employees. If you are a DOE employee, you can submit your complaint with your school principal or on the DOE website.

    Charter and private schools do not have to follow the public school calendar or DOE's school closure policy for severe weather or emergencies.

    You should contact your child's school directly for information.

    Parking restrictions remain in effect while schools are in session.

    Parking is allowed in school zones only when school is in recess. However, you should be aware that specific schools may be open on holidays and during summer vacations. Parking restrictions would remain in effect.

    Also, when schools are open for summer sessions, teacher meetings, or similar activities, the parking regulations apply on such days, even if students aren't attending.
